Your Role

The successful candidate will join a young, strong and motivated SpaceR research group focused on increasing the autonomy of aerial, planetary and orbital robotics for on-earth applications, space exploration, on-orbit servicing and manufacturing and space resource utilization.

This innovative research group is led by Prof. Miguel Olivares-Mendez. She / He will contribute to an ESA project in the Mechatronic design, development and control of a robotic puller system for an space manufacturing system .

The candidate will carry out research to pursue a PhD in the following topic : Perception and Control of a Robotic Puller System for an Space Manufacturing System.

Your Profile

Experience : The ideal candidate should have knowledge and experience in the following topics :

  • Mechatronics design
  • Sensor selection (force, position, and temperature), sensor fusion, data processing and control.
  • Perception based control techniques;
  • General robotics mechanics, kinematics and dynamics
  • Soft-robotics
  • Hands-on experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Matlab, C / C++ and / or Python;
  • Experience on Micro-gravity and / or vacumm chamber laboratories with be an asset
  • be familiar with the principles of

  • Linear algebra, coordinate frame transformations
  • Optimization
  • Machine learning for robotics will be an asset
  • The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks :

  • Carrying out research in the predefined areas
  • Carriyng out Lab activities and maintenance and collaboration with other team members
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications
  • Supervise Master students
  • Assisting in organization of relevant workshops
  • Qualification : The candidate should possess an MSc degree or equivalent in Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or affine.

  • Enthusiasm for scientific issues and scientific working methods;
  • Strong programming skills in C / C++, Python, Matlab
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Commitment, team working and a critical mind
  • Language Skills : Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of French, German or Luxembourgish is desirable.
