The Department of Law of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance of the University of Luxembourg is looking for a PhD candidate to conduct research in the context of the interdisciplinary research project on Criminal Proceedings and the Use of AI : Challenges for Common Criminal Procedure Principles and the Principles of the Rule of Law .

The research project is funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche. It gathers highly qualified experts in criminal law, IT law, data protection law, as well as in AI and machine learning, cybernetics, ethics, and representatives of the private sector developing AI to examine critical questions about using AI in criminal proceedings.

The doctoral researcher will be working under the supervision of Professor Katalin Ligeti in the framework of the above-described research project.

The doctoral researcher’s main task will be to prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Criminal Justice.

The thesis work will be undertaken at the University of Luxembourg but can also be jointly-supervised with another university.

The suggested theme of the PhD is AI and Predictions in Criminal Justice : Assessing the Risks of Flight and Recidivism in the Era of Algorithms .

The candidate is, however, welcome to suggest any other topic within the overarching project theme. The doctoral candidate will contribute to the teaching of classes ranging from one to three hours per week, of small group teachings and tutorials.

The doctoral researcher will benefit from being part of large research group comprising several PhDs and Postdoctoral Researchers working on related topics of AI, Technology and Criminal Law.

Being part of the project will allow the doctoral researcher to enhance his / her knowledge-base and experience; working on the various aspects of the project will not only strengthen his / her academic profile, but also give him / her access to (and the chance to critically engage with) some of the most renowned experts in the field.


We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated interest in AI (e.g., its technical aspects) and criminal procedure law.

In particular, the following requirements apply

  • A Master’s Degree in Law (in EU / international / national criminal law being an asset);
  • Fluent written and spoken English (working knowledge of French and / or German considered an asset);
