The Life Cycle Sustainability and Risk Assessment (LiSRA) Unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation department (ERIN) of LIST is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human driven systems.
Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability oriented policy-
making. In particular, the Unit is developing new metrics to assess the sustainability of large scale systems (like cities or regions), in particular when challenged by public policies, and the support provided by ecosystems services to human activities, under the umbrella of Circular Economy.
To this aim, the Unit already has strong skills in different mathematical modelling techniques including optimization, input-
output modelling, multi-criteria analysis, agent-based modelling, stock-flow model frameworks, system dynamics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
We are currently missing expertise in economics and in particular ecological economics applied to the assessment of sustainability and of externalities of circular economy systems.
In order to sustain the research developments with solid economic background, in particular in relation to circular economy business models, and to strengthen their impact, we are looking for an experienced R&T Associate able to build a research stream on the monetisation of environmental impacts, in particular ecosystem services, and on the design and quantitative assessment of circular economy business models.
The incumbent is supposed to apply these developments to industrial business cases in the broader field of Smart Manufacturing and Smart Cities.
The expertise we are looking for is therefore strategic and central in the short and medium term for the mission and development of the RDI Unit.
We are looking for a scientist with at least 10-year experience (after the successful completion of a doctoral degree) in the field of ecological economics.
Knowledge on Sustainability Assessment, in particular Life Cycle Assessment is highly welcomed. The successful candidate shall demonstrate proven knowledge and experience in the quantitative evaluation of Earth's carrying capacity and of the economic value of natural capital and ecosystem services.
Specific experience in the building and demonstration of Circular Economy systems, in particular business models, in the strategic areas of interest for LIST, i.
e. smart manufacturing (in particular relative to additive manufacturing and composites) and smart cities (in particular mobility and construction) is highly welcomed.
The scientist will have to submit research proposals to secure funding from national and international competitive programs.
To that respect, he / she shall demonstrate a proven track record of funded proposals, ideally from European programs like FP6-
7 and H2020. In the medium term, the scientist is expected to develop his / her own research line to support the methodological research activity of the Unit.
The incumbent will have also to valorize the research results by transferring them to the private and public sectors, through the development and exploitation of an intellectual property rights portfolio.
Contribution to scientific valorization through papers published in top-ranked scientific journals and through presentations at international conferences will be also mandatory to foster the international visibility of the Unit.
