Internship - IoT Sensor Platforms for Drones
il y a 20j

6-month internship, starting in April 2019 (flexible)

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of the SES Networks Systems Engineering team in a fast-paced, global organization within an innovative and unique industry.

Based in Luxembourg, you will contribute to our activities in the area of critical infrastructure protection and public protection and disaster relief.

Drones and the Internet of Things (IoT) are complementary technologies in certain fields. Drones may deliver sensor platforms to devastated areas not accessible to emergency staff or visit those platforms to harvest data collected by them.

You will investigate the different technologies, define use cases and implement a prototype which provides a solution to one of the defined use cases.

Your responsibilities

  • Perform a state of the art review of lightweight and low cost IoT sensor platforms fitting with the constraints imposed by commercial grade drones;
  • Investigate IoT low power wireless network protocols for their applicability in a two way drone to earth communication scenario;
  • Define use cases for various communication scenarios;
  • Select one use case and design an end-to-end communication system by considering the findings from the theoretical investigations;
  • Implement a prototype to demonstrate the function of the communication system;
  • Identify areas which require further investigations and propose a way forward;
  • Document your research findings in an MSc Thesis or Technical Report.
  • Your profile

  • Advanced Master’s student in Embedded Systems or in a relevant ICT area;
  • Strong computer programming language skills in particular in C / C++ and Python;
  • Strong background in Linux and bare metal programming;
  • Familiar with platforms such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ESP8266 or Adafruit Feather;
  • Experienced with cross-development environment for embedded systems;
  • Excellent analytical and judgment skills;
  • Ability to set priorities and to work under tight deadlines;
  • Computer literate (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel);
  • Work independently as well as in a team;
  • Easiness to communicate at all levels;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English with additional languages considered an asset;
  • EU nationality or work permit for Luxembourg.
  • We offer you

  • A diverse workplace. For SES, diversity is more than a question of gender or race; we welcome different minds and different skills.
  • An exciting experience in a fast moving and fascinating industry. Our technology is launching into space on the next generation of rockets.
  • The internship is remunerated. SES provides sport facilities and a canteen on site.
  • SES is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
