The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) invites applications from PhD holders in the general areas of Engineering, Robotics and Computer Science.

SnT is carrying out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services, often in collaboration with industrial, governmental or international partners.

SnT is active in several international research projects funded by the EU H2020 and the European Space Agency.

The Centre is currently expanding its research activities and is seeking highly motivated research associates who wish to pursue research in close cooperation with our partners.

The successful candidates will join the SpaceR group led by Prof. Miguel Olivares-Mendez. She / He will contribute to projects on Planetary Robotics in an interdisciplinary project.

The candidate will perform the following tasks :

  • Research position on remote and haptic control and augmented reality development to control remotely and interactively lunar rovers with an onboard robotic arm.
  • The candidate is expected to develop the following topics :

    oHaptic control with multiple data feedback (perception / pressure / temperature)

    oLong-delay control approach (Moon communications delay)

    oAugmented reality based on sensor-fusion

    oRobotic manipulator control

    oRobotic perception

    oState estimation for robotics

  • Develop real-time solutions using ROS
  • Setup and upgrade virtual environments and remote systems based on the requirements of the project
  • Establish a strong connection with other research groups
  • Providing support in setting up and running experiments in the SnT LunaLab, Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) and SatComLab
  • The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks :

  • Researching the predefined areas
  • Participating in research proposal drafting and project deliverables
  • Collaborate in ongoing international and national projects
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications and conference presentations
  • Assisting in the organization of relevant workshops and demos

    Qualification : The candidate should possess a degree in Automation, Robotics, Mechatronic or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or affine.

    With a proven record of accomplishment in the development and testing on :

  • Strong development skills in C++, python and ROS
  • Solid background on haptic systems and virtual / augmented reality environment development
  • Experience on robotics perception, sensor fusion, state estimation and control
  • Hands-on robotic setup and maintenance
  • Commitment, team working and a critical mind
  • A background on orbital and / or planetary robotics will be an asset
  • Experience with ESA, European projects (FP7 / H2020), national projects and industrial projects
  • Language Skills : Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
