Your Role
The successful candidate will join the young, strong and motivated SpaceR research group focused on increasing the autonomy of aerial, planetary and orbital robotics for on-earth applications, space exploration, on-orbit servicing and manufacturing, and space resource utilization.
This innovative research group is led by Prof. Miguel Olivares-Mendez. The candidate will carry out research under the framework of the 5G-SKY project.
She or he will p erform the following tasks :
Research on Machine Learning for pose-estimation and autonomous navigation of aerial robots in urban environments focusing on some of the following topics : Machine learning for robotics Perception for robotics Sensor fusion Robust localization and state estimation SLAM Object detection, recognition and tracking
Develop real-time solutions using ROS
Setup and upgrade aerial robotics systems based on the requirements of the project
Establish a strong connection with the civil aviation national authority
Providing support in setting up and running experiments in the SnT Aerial Robotics Lab (AeRoLab) and outdoors environments
Cooperate with other projects and colleagues at SpaceR to extend the used of the developed approaches to planetary and orbital robotics
Participating in research proposal drafting and project deliverables
Collaborate in ongoing international and national projects
Disseminating results through scientific publications and conference presentations
Assisting in the organization of relevant workshops and demos
Your Profile
Qualification : The candidate should possess a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or affine.
With a proven record of accomplishment in the development and testing of autonomous navigation of aerial robots.
Strong development skills in C++, python and ROS
Experience with sensor fusion, optimization and state estimation
Be familiar with Machine Learning approaches for perception and robotics
Hands-on aerial robot setup and maintenance
Commitment, team working and a critical mind
Experience supervising Master students and theses
Experience with European projects (FP7 / H2020), national projects and industrial projects.
Experience with ESA projects will be an asset.
Language Skills : Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
