Position Reference : 1008
We are currently looking for a Software Defined Radio (SDR) Architect. The SDR Architect will support the development of SDR’s for RHEA end-to-end Cyber Security Testbed for Space-Ground Communication Networks (CEST) Lab in Luxembourg premises.
The CEST is a multifunctional testbed for demonstrating end-to-end space and terrestrial communication networks established through SDRs components.
The deployed SDR’s will initially be prototyped and tested in a lab environment and then will be employed in commercial operations.
The SDR Architect will also be responsible for implementing methods for SDR data acquisition to ensure successful testing, verification, and validation.
The successful candidate in this role requires significant previous experience in designing, developing, and testing many SDR’s particularly on rapid timelines.
We are looking for engineers that enjoy a challenge and have a track record of creative thinking to solve unconventional problems.
Tasks and Activities
The scope of work will include :
Set up and operate laboratory based SDR hardware / software.
Responsible for design, development, and testing of all SDR software and hardware including its FPGA and host interface.
Evaluating SDR’s for incorporation into different space (gateway, payload, end-user, and spacecraft systems) and / or terrestrial end-to-end networks.
Updating or developing Linux device drivers and host interface software to interact with the SDR’s.
Code the protocols, baseband processing, and MAC for SDR-based products.
Developing test software and drivers to support unit, integration, and system testing of all SDR software functions.
Developing software code in one or more languages between C, C++, C#, Java, MATLAB, Python in a Linux or Windows environment.
Working with other software team members to benchmark space and / or terrestrial network applications to identify candidates blocks for migration into FPGA’s.
Designing in-house IP blocks for core space and / or terrestrial networks in a hardware description language (Verilog, VHDL).
Testing and validating hardware blocks both in simulation and on target.
Writing and maintaining documentation for in-house IP blocks and other SDR related software.
Developing software and algorithms, machine-learning algorithms, or artificial intelligence techniques and applying them to digital RF signal processing, RF engineering or spectrum theory, communication systems, electronic warfare.
Perform RF signal reception and transmission of data using various modulations schemes (FSK, PSK, QAM, etc.) as well as transmission schemes (TDMA, FDMA, CDMA , ) into SDR devices.
Good knowledge on RF & Baseband level interference management solutions.
Highly committed, excellent team-worker, and strong critical thinking skills.
The candidates are expected to actively contribute to the different research projects, either coordinating technical contribution and / or preparing project deliverables.
Contributing to new research proposals to attract industrial, national and European projects.
Skills and Experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory :
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication / Electrical / Computer Engineering or related field.
At least 3 years of recent experience working with SDR’s.
Experience with device drivers for communication between Linux user space and / or terrestrial network applications and FPGA’s.
Experience of FPGA design flows (Xilinx, Altera).
Experience with SoC (System on Chip) platforms such as the Zynq.
Working knowledge of interface protocols (AXI, OCP)
Ability to create detailed test-benches for bench-marking and testing deployed SDR’s.
Ability to work with at least one hardware description language (Verilog, VHDL).
Experience using SDR lab equipment for testing and validation.
Experience with implementing DSP algorithms in FPGA’s’.
Experience working with multiple programming languages (C, C++), scripting languages (Python, Bash), operating systems, and development environments.
Experience of working with industrial projects and public funded research projects.
Ability to work in a team in an international environment.
The following skills would be highly desirable :
Experience developing cyber-security algorithms (encryption, decryption, other)
Experience in European Space Agency projects.
Experience in writing proposal and supporting technical deliverable reports.
