The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the following vacancy within the Department of Social Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences :

Doctoral researcher student) in Sociology

  • Preferably from 15 October 2020
  • 36 months fixed-term contract (extendable to 48 months if required)

  • The successful candidate will investigate the social, economic, and health consequences of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic among young people.

    A specific focus will be on various policy-relevant facets of social inequality. To this end, the student will analyze data collected by several waves of the Youth Survey Luxembourg (YSL), supervised by Assoc.

    Prof. Dr. Robin Samuel. YSL covers a range of topics such as attitudes, health, political participation, values, and various items related to the pandemic.

    Luxembourg is a highly diverse society and there is a need to better understand how social background shapes life chances and outcomes in these challenging times.

    The successful candidate will become a member of the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences and the Centre for Childhood and Youth Research (CCY) within the Department of Social Sciences.

    The CCY comprises a multidisciplinary research team that examines the conditions and opportunity structures of growing up against the backdrop of social change and inequalities.

    It maintains strong links to other institutes within and beyond the department, both nationally and internationally.

    Tasks

  • Write a cumulative thesis on a topic in the area of social, economic, and health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic among young people with a focus on social inequality (mainly based on quantitative analyses of YSL data)
  • Participate in national and international conferences
  • Contribute to reports and research publications
  • Engage in policy-relevant analyses and dissemination of results to stakeholders
  • Contribute to preparation and implementation of the next waves of the YSL in 2021 and 2023 / 24
  • Profile

  • Excellent master’s degree in sociology or the social sciences
  • Experience and strong interest in quantitative research methods
  • Familiarity with statistical software for quantitative analyses Python, R, Stata)
  • Willingness to expand on analytical skills
  • Excellent command of at least two of the following languages : English, French, German (written and spoken); Luxembourgish is considered an asset
