The Materials Research and Technology (MRT) Department of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is seeking to appoint a Core Technologies Leader to support the department strategy that aims at leveraging scientific results towards science-based technology innovation.
As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the Materials Research and Technology Department develops Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) that underpin a wide range of products in strategic EU value chains and provide innovative solutions to societal challenges.
MRT mainly addressed three EU KETs : Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials and Advanced Manufacturing and focused its research on new or improved materials that provide a distinct performance advantage in comparison to the commonly used materials.
Activities embrace the development, production or integration of advanced materials and equipment or system dedicated to the synthesis and the characterization of such materials.
KETs having applications in multiple industries in both emerging and traditional sectors, this approach is particularly suitable for Luxembourg which features a significant number of large, medium-size and small industrial companies covering a broad range of sectors (transport, electronic, energy, cleantech, glass, buildings, cosmetics, metallurgy, space, equipment processing / engineering, health tech and others etc.
MRT aims at being active all along the materials value chain (from Raw Materials to semi-finished to end-products) that includes advanced capabilities in mature manufacturing, and the materials integration into advanced product technologies truly enabling the industrial innovation.
In that context, the core technologies leader plays a pivotal role.
The department MRT is currently composed of about 190 collaborators and is engaged into the following activities :
a Research unit which focuses on Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology . The aim of this unit is to translate the enabling capabilities of nanotechnology / nanomaterials into application-driven solutions which take advantage of the functional properties of materials
a Research unit dealing with Instrumentation and process engineering in the fields of nanoanalytics instruments and surface treatments relying on process technology.
a Research unit investigating functional and bio-based polymers including bio-degradable and recyclable plastics, macromolecular chemistry, responsive polymers and polymers physics
a Research unit studying structural composites materials with a specific focus on the design and durability of high performance and multi-functional composites based on advanced modeling expertise together with Interface engineering towards better performance and durability
a transversal Platform regrouping Materials Characterization and Testing, Composites manufacturing and Prototyping, which provides access to state-of the art characterization in the field of Molecular Analysis / Elemental and Isotopic Analysis / Structure, Morphology and Topography / Mechanical Testing and Accelerated Ageing / Thermal Analysis / Composites manufacturing / Specific Prototyped high-end home-made processes and equipment
The engineer will join our composite manufacturing platform for supporting the activities related to robotized / automated structural composite manufacturing, structural composite additive manufacturing and composite welding.
The candidate will contribute to develop innovative manufacturing processes. She / he will actively participate to the development of new methodologies in the framework of research projects carried out with internal and / or external partners.
The responsibilities of the engineer will also include :
contribution to research project by implementing innovative processes
contribution to the definition, and performing of test plan and result analysis
in charge of the tooling and prototype machine definition and development in close interaction with the prototyping team
follow-up of internal / external requests
performing service work and writing related reports, requested by industrial partners
participating to the laboratory and equipment management
documenting and archiving the results and related data, including the writing of reports requested internally
Master in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Composites Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
Experience of 5-8 years in an industrial or RTO environment
Demonstrated technical expertise in one or more of the following manufacturing technologies : robotized / automated composite manufacturing process ( Automated fibre placement, continuous fibre reinforced 3D winding, continuous fibres reinforced 3D printing , thermoplastic stamping / thermo-compression), resin transfer moulding (RTM) / Liquid resin Infusion (LRI), thermoplastic composite welding
Demonstrated technical expertise in multiple material systems and process development for one or more of the following : thermoset composite, (reactive) thermoplastics composite
Demonstrated technical expertise in tooling definition and design
Experience with CAD software
History of developing materials and manufacturing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
Knowledge in destructive (mechanical, thermos-physical) and non-destructive methods for composite material
Experience doing design / test for aerospace applications
Knowledge in process monitoring
Ability to program and control a robotized process
Either English or French is mandatory
