The successful candidate will join the Environmental Research and Innovation ( ERIN ) department. With a team of more than 170 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and IT science, the ERIN department is tackling major environmental challenges our society is facing today : climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.
We are offering a postdoctoral researcher position in Earth Observation (EO) data analytics. She / he will join the Remote Sensing and Natural Resources Modelling team of ERIN's Environmental Modelling and Sensing (ENVISION) unit.
This unit carries out impact-driven research, geared towards monitoring, forecasting and predicting environmental systems in a changing world.
She / he will integrate an interdisciplinary team of around 50 scientists, engineers, post-docs and PhD candidates supporting the public and private sectors by developing new process understanding, alongside new environmental management tools and technologies, operating at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales.
Satellite remote sensing data for EO, most notably the data streams generated by the Sentinel missions under the framework of the European Copernicus program, provide an unprecedented wealth of information for crisis events affecting large areas.
The open position aims to complement ongoing work retrieving actionable pieces of information from such multi sensor EO data.
The work will include exploring how different collections of satellite EO data can be used to substantially reduce disaster risk (i.
e. losses in lives, livelihoods and health, damages to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services). New data processing tools need to be developed to contribute to an improved understanding of disaster risk in all its dimensions of vulnerability, capacity, exposure of persons and assets, hazard characteristics and the environment.
Such knowledge may then be used for risk assessment, prevention, mitigation, preparedness and emergency response.
The successful applicant is expected to :
Contribute to the development of tailored products from EO data for various stakeholders in disaster risk management and, in particular, flood management
Intervene in developing classification algorithms for the identification of changes occurring in the areas of interest using large collections of radar data from Sentinel 1 and optical data from Sentinel 2.
Moreover, the extraction of added value products for operational use usually involves the exploration of heterogeneous data from other sources that need to be proficiently combined
Apply the classification algorithms on collections of Copernicus data to generate geo-information databases informing on disaster risk at large scale (with a special focus on flood risk)
Collaborate with an international project team on the development of innovative data fusion approaches of EO data, as well as on assimilation methods for the integration of observation data into environmental models
Moreover, the applicant could also be involved in the following research tasks :
Provide input to the definition of research concepts
Collaborate with other researchers in order to promote interdisciplinary activities internally
Assist in the preparation of project reports and presentations
Manage work packages of small RDI projects or small service offers under the supervision and mentorship of more senior staff
Contribute to dissemination, valorisation and transfer of RDI results (patents, licences, prototypes, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences)
Make presentations at workshops with guidance and prior internal review
Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, Geosciences or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent), with a speciality in data processing

Expertise in remote sensing data processing (i.e. calibration, data resampling, geo-referencing, generation of time series of geophysical parameters), Open GIS
Experience in programming and, more specifically, in processing and analysing collections of multi-temporal remote sensing images
Expertise in designing, implementing and operating complex processing chains, big data analytics, technical integration of scientific algorithms on web-
based exploitation platforms
Experience in accessing and processing satellite EO data archives using relevant computing resources for data exploitation
Knowledge of using Grid and Cloud, HPC, and emerging web-based technologies for EO and environmental applications
Programming skills in Matlab, IDL (or equivalent image processing software)
Proficient spoken and written knowledge of English is mandatory
Proficiency of at least one of the official languages of the country is an asset (French, German or Luxembourgish)
