Amazon Transportation Services is seeking a Research Scientist to be based out of the EU Headquarter in Luxembourg. As a key part of the Transportation Network Design and Optimization team, this person will be responsible for forecasting, modelling and implementing robust middle-
mile plans for EU. The successful applicant will ensure that our end to end network strategies in terms of Fulfilment Centres production, customer demand, consolidation locations, linehaul / airhaul options and last-
mile transportation are streamlined and optimized.
This critical role requires an aptitude for independent initiative and decision-making, the ability to drive innovation in Transportation modelling and optimization across Amazon’s expanding European network and linking into global initiatives and expansion strategies.
Tasks / Responsibilities :
Partner with the linehaul, Airhaul and sort center operations, while working closely with lastmile transportation and logistics, fulfilment centers and supply chain teams for predicting, diagnosing and fixing demand variability in the middle-mile network.
Research, design, implement and evaluate novel forecasting models and predictive algorithms to meet Amazon's production requirements
Build and improve software and tools by translating functional requirements into robust, scalable, supportable solutions that work well within the overall system architecture
Participate in the full development life-cycle, including design, development, and implementation. Collaborate closely with research team members on developing systems from prototyping to production level
Work on large-scale datasets, focusing on creating scalable and accurate forecasting systems in versatile application fields
Actively troubleshoot and support applications in production environments
Track general business activity and provide clear, compelling management reports on a regular basis
PhD in Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
8+ years post PhD experience in Predictive Modeling, Machine Learning, or similar function
Research experience in machine learning, machine learning systems and ideally in time series proven by scientific track record
Project management experience working with tech and other cross-functional teams.
Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals
Knowledge of tools for large-scale data systems and the ability to manipulate data (e.g. SQL, Python, Perl, or Ruby).
Strong coding skills (C++, Java, C#)
Practical experience in Object Oriented Design.
Intermediate Linux / UNIX skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both technical and business people.
Strong problem solving ability and dealing with ambiguity.
Experience in using R, Weka, SAS, Matlab or any other statistical software
Experience with distributed systems
Experience with hosting and supporting cloud-based solutions
