Deputy Chief Compliance Officer

At Airbnb, the Payments Compliance Team maintains a global regulatory compliance program that supports 191 countries, 70 currencies, connects dozens of payment providers and banks, and processes multiple billions of dollars.

The Compliance team is tasked with protecting the payments that run through our payments infrastructure by building controls into our products, ensuring we know our customers, investigating unusual activities, filing regulatory reports with relevant regulatory agencies and carrying out economic sanctions screening.

In this role you would ensure that day-to-day compliance operational activities are appropriate for the business, maintained to the department’s high internal standards, and will interact with our regulatory agencies and other key partners.

The Airbnb Compliance team is building a scalable Compliance foundation to support regulatory compliance on a global scale.

The team helps the company grow by ensuring that the payments product can continue to grow in a safe and compliant fashion.

The Deputy Chief Compliance Officer will help us continue to build and strengthen our payments compliance program for Airbnb Payments Luxembourg.

Reporting into the Chief Compliance Officer in Luxembourg and in collaboration with Compliance leadership, as well as global functional work streams.

A key responsibility of this role is to be the AML / KYC SME. You will support all aspects of the implementation and maintenance of the Payments compliance programme, ensuring we’re up to date and compliant with all requirements so that we are able to protect and grow our community with best in class payments whilst minimising regulatory risk.

The role will act as the CCO’s delegate for approving high risk clients, PEP approval and internal escalations for EU / UK compliance operations.

Acting as support (and alternative) point of contact for relationships with regulators, including CSSF, FIU and FCA. Providing support and point of contact for internal and quality assurance audits.

You’ll work with a cross functional team of engineers, data scientists, compliance operations, and legal to jointly develop our compliance program, to ensure the safety of the payments that flow through Airbnb.

Required Qualifications :

  • 7-10 years Compliance experience in retail financial services, preferably payment platforms.
  • Prior experience in providing subject matter expertise on AML, particularly KYC programmes.
  • Strong knowledge of all CSSF requirements applying to online payment entities in Luxembourg and EU, particularly Money Laundering / Financing of Terrorism, the Payment Services Directives, and all Privacy and Data related requirements
  • Hands on experience in preparation and filing of all necessary CSSF reports (compliance summary report, complaints, AML questionnaire)
  • Experience representing Compliance and building relationships with regulatory agencies, key payment partners and auditors.
  • Ability to identify and propose strategies to manage compliance risk whilst supporting the business
  • Able to mine data to drive and support decisions
  • Experience in setting and managing service levels with outsource providers (including internal)
  • Maintaining, reviewing and proposing required changes to policies and procedures appropriate for the business whilst remaining aligned with the global strategy
  • Ability to create strong partnerships within the compliance, legal, product and engineering teams and provide clear requirements to them
  • Thrives in a small team with a global reach : loves hands on dealing with fast pace, changing needs, and delivering successfully with a small team.
  • Must be able to speak English fluently and idiomatically.
  • An extremely high level of personal integrity and discipline
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Preparation and management of creating hands-on internal and external reports.
  • Preferably can contribute knowledge towards AML risk assessment.
  • Experience with global payment programs and shared services teams.
  • Operations : experience working with remotely based functional work streams, and manage time zone challenges
  • Ability to both lead and work within a cross functional team and motivate people to excel under pressure
  • Fluency in French is preferable but not essential.
