Your work environment

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT.

By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

You will be part of the LIST Environmental Research and Innovation department

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today such as adaptation to climate change, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, environmental pollution prevention and control.

To this end, the mission of the ERIN department is :

1) To conduct impact-driven scientific research and development, as well as technological innovation

2) To support companies in the implementation of new environmental regulations and advise governments on determining sustainable policies for the future, with the objectives of :

  • Analysing, managing and exploiting sustainable resources (water, air, soil, renewable energy, bioresources)
  • Reducing the environmental impact of human consumption and production activities
  • The selected applicant will join ERIN's Environmental and Industrial Biotechnologies (BIOTECH) unit. This RDI unit has developed expertise in :

  • Proofing new concepts using metabolic engineering and integrative biology approaches for the production of biomolecules of industrial interest produced by plants or microorganisms
  • Developing new technologies and processes to control, treat and remediate environmental pollutions, with a focus on microorganism-based biotechnologies
  • Developing bio-process engineering solutions to convert organic resources into energy and molecules for industry
  • The BIOTECH unit carries out impact-driven research geared to the development of bio-based products and processes of industrial interest, new biorefinery concepts for more efficient and sustainable processes, and new technologies for the detection and treatment of environmental pollution.

    Position and assignments

    What you will be doing

The selected candidate will more specifically join the Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnologies research group, which among others develops monitoring tools for microbial contamination in the environment and studies the effectiveness of various antimicrobial compounds as well as the environmental application of probiotics.

The successful candidate should have experience in the isolation, physiological characterisation and mass culture of microorganisms isolated from the environment.

Your main missions are to :

  • Characterise microorganisms isolated from the environment in their ability to compete with pathogens either through ecological interactions such as competition, toxins / antimicrobial compounds production or biofilm development
  • Culture these microorganisms at different scales from vials to bioreactors
  • Develop adequate formulations incorporating microorganisms in cleaning solutions
  • Determine the safety and viability of the formulation over time
  • During the course of the project, you will have to : :

  • Work autonomously on the tasks cited above and report on due time to allow the different partners to use to results for other tasks
  • Disseminate, valorise and transfer RDI results (patents, publications, technical reports, participation in conferences, etc.)
  • Actively collaborate with other researchers in order to promote interdisciplinary activities internally and externally
  • Geographic mobility :

    Educational background

  • PhD in industrial microbiology or related disciplines
  • Required seniority

Required qualifications include at least 2 years of professional experience after PhD, ability to work with a team and ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.

  • Excellent writing- and reporting / presentation skills (scientific level)
  • Excellent written / verbal communication skills with the proven ability to effectively communicate across different levels of the organization and with customers
  • Customer and result oriented attitude
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities according to the results of the project
  • Willingness to work collegially in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment
  • Technical skills

The candidate will preferably have hands-on experience in applied microbiology (culture of difficult-to-grow bacteria), molecular microbiology (sequencing, basic bioinformatics) and industrial microbiology (bacteria culture in bioreactor).

    Language skills

  • English is mandatory
  • French or German will be considered as an asset
