G. Lenzini, within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust ( SnT ) of the University of Luxembourg.

We look for 2 PhD candidates in the scope of the H2020 MSCA-ITN-2020 - Innovative Training Networks project Legality Attentive Data Scientists (LeADS) i

The trained legality attentive data scientists will be experts in both data science and law, able to maintain innovative solutions within the realm of law and help expand legal frontiers according to innovation needs.

The University of Luxembourg is looking for candidates that can contribute to one of the following research projects :

  • Processing of biometric data to support the use of e-identities in key activities of the EU digital society . This project is about processes, services and protocols that require biometric data in user authentication in the context of services supporting the EU Digital Single Market, such as : e-education (e.
  • g., digital diploma certificates), e-health (e.g., electronic patient records, biomedical data), and e-commerce (e.g., intellectual property rights, fintech).

  • Technologies for algorithms and algorithmic transparency and fairness . This project is about overcoming opacity and inscrutability in current algorithms and protocols (e.
  • g., technical, economic, and social aspect), and a about discussing the application of principles of algorithmic transparency, accountability, and explainability.

    It looks for solutions that ensure that critical outputs are not biased or erroneous but trustworthy, lawful, and fair.

    Your role :

  • Conduct innovative interdisciplinary research in cybersecurity and data protection
  • Publish research results and present them at international conferences
  • Contribute to reports and research publications
  • Engage in dissemination of results to stakeholders
  • Write a cumulative PhD thesis
  • Your Profile

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, obtained less than 4 years prior to your recruitment
  • Strong mathematical and algorithmic background. Knowledge of basic security protocols and data science techniques (statistics, data analysis, and machine learning).
  • You must not have been awarded a doctoral degree
  • Proficiency in English (French, German or Luxembourgish is desirable)
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research, with a focus on cybersecurity and data privacy, and with an eye on legal and ethical issues
  • Good academic writing and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to independently organize work
  • Inquisitive and critical mind, collaborative attitude
  • NOTE : Given the specific rules governing the funding of these PhD positions, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.

    in Luxembourg for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment. Short stays, like holidays, do not count.
