The Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit of the Environmental Research and Innovation department (ERIN) of LIST is developing knowledge, transferable technologies (software and lab models) and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability of human driven systems, with particular focus on manufacturing industry, (renewable) energy production and distribution systems and land-

territorial management. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability-oriented policy-making.

The SUSTAIN Unit empowers innovation via four expertise areas : 1) life cycle sustainability assessment 2) environmental health 3) sustainable energy systems and 4) environmental policies (EPs).

You will join the SUSTAIN Unit and you will lead the environmental policies (EPs) research development and innovation group, which counts today about nine people.

The group provides RDI based support to national and EU authorities as well as companies (especially SMEs) in the definition, implementation and evaluation of environmental policies and related technologies, e.

g. on chemicals, waste, industrial installations (national Commodo law) and soil. This support includes, among others, the preparation of tools, methods and guidelines for companies and authorities, Helpdesk services (high reactivity support), knowledge transfer (via the Betriber&Emwelt platform) and the provision of regulatory expertise (opinions, reports, analyses).


Your mission is to manage and leverage the EPs RDI Group to develop and maintain a sustainable project portfolio supporting national and EU authorities as well as companies in defining and implementing environmental policies.

Thanks to proven project management and proposals definition experiences, you will accelerate the growth of the group activities.

In this context your tasks will mainly be, but not limited to :

Project definition and group management :

  • Define and propose a strategy for the group, which supports national / EU authorities in defining environmental policies and enables private companies to apply them.
  • Implement the group’s strategy and adapt it if required

  • Overall management, coordination and performance follow-up of the research group : lead a multicultural and multidisciplinary team of researchers and create a stimulating and satisfying work environment within the group, assume the operational responsibility of the group's human resources
  • Lead the definition and manage projects related to the development of tools, methods and guidelines for companies and authorities, manage the Helpdesk services, activities of knowledge transfer and the provision of regulatory expertise (opinions, reports, analyses)
  • Develop RDI and policy support project proposals, targeting EU funding, national funding and industrial partnerships (bilateral projects)
  • Guarantee the professional execution of the RDI projects of the group
  • Ensure the implementation of the RDI group business plan and that the RDI group's contribution to the RDI Unit’s / ERIN’s department performance indicators is achieved
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration with other RDI units / groups of LIST research departments
  • Dissemination, valorisation and Strategy :

  • Develop the valorisation of the group's outcomes in terms of publications, workshops, thematic conferences and other dissemination means
  • Develop external collaborations, partnerships and networks
  • Insure the financial follow-up of the group's performance
  • Assist the Head of Unit in reporting tasks and other administrative activities
  • Scientific and Technology Excellence :

    Beside these responsibilities and missions, the Group Leader shall continue to build his / her scientific and technological knowledge and directly contribute to projects relying on his / her high level of expertise.


  • PhD in Natural or Engineering science
  • Competencies

  • The candidate is expected to have a significant experience (10 years after the PhD)
  • Knowledge and interest in Luxembourg and in the Luxembourgish socio-economic and policy system
  • Previous experience in working with public authorities and private companies is considered as a strong asset
  • Track record of involvement of European and national environmental policies
  • Track record in management or large projects
  • Track record of granted (EU or national) projects
  • Languages

  • English and French and / or German mandatory
