We’re looking for people driven by excellence, excited about innovation, and looking to make a difference. If this sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place!

Your Role

The advent of 5G has enabled a new era of ubiquitous connected devices and new applications requiring larger capacity and high-density connectivity, but also more demanding Positioning, Navigation and Timing requirements.

It is well-known that accurate radio-based positioning is the enabler of many location-based services related for instance to safety, intelligent transportation, entertainment, industry automation, robotics and remote operation services.

Nowadays, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which is a term that comprises GPS and Galileo among other systems, constitutes still today the only wide-spread reliable solution thanks to its high precision and coverage.

However, there are still a number of use cases where GNSS alone cannot fulfill all the expectations of the users. It is on those cases where the synergies of GNSS and cellular-based PNT techniques have the greatest potential, even more when considering the advancements to the brought about by the new features of 5G technologies to support PNT services such as wider bandwidth signals, new frequency bands in the mmWave range and massive antenna arrays.

In this context, we aim to contribute to the development and standardization of hybrid 5G and GNSS applications The successful candidates will join a strong and motivated research team lead by Prof.

Björn Ottersten and Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas to carry out research in order to pursue a PhD on the following topics :

  • 5G-enabled PNT algorithms : TDOA, AOA, mmWave beamforming, precoding-based AOA, etc.
  • Combined 5G and GNSS time, frequency, and phase synchronization for distributed systems.
  • Contribute to the standardization of GNSS techniques (PPP, RTK, etc) to the 3GPP standards.
  • Implementation of hardware demonstrators using SDR devices.
  • The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks :

  • Carrying out research in the predefined areas
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications
  • Participating in proposal drafting
  • Assisting in organization of relevant workshops
  • Your Profile

Qualification : The candidate should possess an MSc degree or equivalent in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics.

Experience : The ideal candidate should have some knowledge and experience in a number of the following topics :

  • Signal processing for wireless communications.
  • GNSS-enabled PNT algorithms and applications.
  • Hands-on in real-time signal processing hardware (CPU / GPU / FPGA / SDR).
  • and be familiar with the principles of

  • Wireless Communication Standards (IEEE 802.11, 3GPP and / or DVB).
  • Dynamic beam-forming and / or Precoding techniques.
  • GNSS positioning systems.
  • Development skills in C / C++ and MATLAB are required. Hands-on LabVIEW / NI USRP and / or other SDR devices are desired.

Language Skills : Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.

Here’s what awaits you at SnT

  • A stimulating learning environment. Here post-docs and professors outnumber PhD students. That translates into access and close collaborations with some of the brightest ICT researchers, giving you solid guidance
  • Exciting infrastructures and unique labs. At SnT’s two campuses, our researchers can take a walk on the moon at the LunaLab, build a nanosatellite, or help make autonomous vehicles even better
