Within the University, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is a highly interdisciplinary research centre (IC), integrating experimental biology and computational biology approaches in order to develop the foundation of a future predictive, preventive and personalized medicine.

Mission :

The new team member will be responsible for the laboratory specific risk (chemical, physical, biological) prevention, mitigation, reduction and management to enable research activities.

She / he will contribute to provide a safe and efficient lab environment to the researchers and laboratory staff. The activities include designing, implementing, carrying out of safety as well as safety related quality processes and policies.

A key responsibility will be to ensure compliance with internal guidelines, the law and further relevant legislation, in order to contribute to the prevention of work-related risks and the enhancement of safe working conditions in the labs.

As the LCSB will welcome a new Director beginning of 2022, the safety organization and the reporting line will be decided by him during the year.

The candidate will have a functional reporting line to the University’s central safety and security team leader.

Your Role...

The emphasize for all areas of responsibility is on a close, trustful collaboration with the researchers and all lab staff members, the LCSB support team as well as the central safety and security team :

  • Responsible for the development and deployment of laboratory safety risk management, policy, procedures, protocols, dashboards and tools in alignment with the LCSB management and central safety team
  • In charge of the daily risk assessment and management including a clear communication and appropriate action
  • Ensure the UL workplace accident prevention policy, improvements in safety and safety related quality matters collaboration with safety and security teams, LSCB management
  • Elaborate and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); approve SOPs written by safety colleagues and LCSB staff members and contribute to University initiatives
  • Perform regular inspections to ensure that laboratory standards are applied. Participate in investigation and incident / emergency management.
  • Develop and ensure implementing of appropriate mitigation

  • Closely collaborate with the University’s Safety and Security team, safety officers in the Faculty and other central services to provide an efficient and safe working environment
  • Enforcement of safety and safety related quality practices and awareness among staff
  • Stay up to date on own qualification, knowledge, legislation and competencies to carry out this mission by ensuring the training on the job of colleagues as well as of lab staff through appropriate trainings / learning initiatives
  • Develop safety trainings and ensure the training organisation / training records
  • Ensures the LCSB internal operational lab safety organisation in alignment with the central safety and security team
  • Engages in developing network with internal and external stakeholder
  • What we expect from you

  • Master's degree in science or equivalent educational background (Ph.D. degree is considered an advantage), with a good knowledge in biology and chemistry
  • At least 6 years working experience in a comparable role in a research laboratory or industry
  • Experience in risk management and assessment, problem solving as well as dealing a complex environment
  • Biosafety training is mandatory
  • Team player with a very collaborative approach, excellent communication and relationship management skills
  • High ability to develop good relations with the researchers and laboratory staff to enable research in a safe environment
  • Excellent writing skills to develop a broad range of quality / safety documents, including official authorisations
  • Fluency in English and a good level in French (speaking and writing); German and / or Luxembourgish are considered as an advantage
  • Very good organisational skills
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office
