The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT.

By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

Through its research into advanced materials and processes, the Materials Research and Technology (MRT) department, with its 200 researchers and engineers, contributes to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry.

MRT’s activities hinge on four thematic pillars : nanomaterials and nanotechnology, scientific instrumentation and process technology, structural composites, and functional polymers.

The department also includes four high-tech platforms, focusing on composites, prototyping, characterization and testing.

These platforms serve both LIST research staff, and other stakeholders in Luxembourg.

Responsibilities

What you will be doing

Context

The energy needed to cool down our houses and our food stands for 15 % of the overall energy spent in the world. Electrocaloric materials could be an alternative to suppress the greenhouse gases from our fridges and improve their efficiency.

These materials experience large variations of temperature when a voltage is applied. LIST has recently developed an electrocaloric heat pump exhibiting a temperature variation of 13 K, the largest ever recorded (Torello et al.

Science 370, 125 (2020)). This result has been obtained with ceramics but electroactive polymers stand for a credible alternative.

This is what we want to study in this project.

Mission

The objective of this project is to fabricate an electrocaloric polymer-based heat pump.

More specifically, the post doc will develop cooling modules based on polymers. Thorough characterisations will be performed on the fabricated modules (IR camera, ferroelectric loops, DSC).

These modules will eventually be assembled in a heat exchanger proof of concept and tested on a dedicated set-up.

Must have requirements

Which profile we are looking for

  • PhD degree in Materials Science
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in publications, patents, reports, presentations and / or proposals
  • Collaborative skills, initiative, result oriented, organization, and capacity to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • A strong taste for experimental science. Team spirit is also a must
  • Electrical measurements such as ferroelectric loops, IV curves
  • An experience on thermometry would be a plus
  • An experience on serigraphy would also be a plus
  • Assist in the preparation of project reports and presentations
  • Provide input to the definition of research concepts
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with multiple collaborators
  • Proficient level of English is required
  • Required languages
