Context

With a team of more than 170 scientists and engineers from life science, environmental science, and IT science, LIST’s Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department has the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle major environmental challenges our society is facing today : climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is offering a full time engineer position in the domain of environmental policies.

The selected candidate will be part of the Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) research unit at the Department of Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) at LIST and will join the Environmental Policies group (EPS) of the SUSTAIN research unit.

The EPS group aims to contribute to a better control of environmental risks and the development towards a tox-free, circular society via science based support to the definition, implementation and evaluation of environmental policies at national and EU level.

It targets in particular (but is not restricted to) policies around chemicals, industrial installations, waste, and biodiversity.

As part of these activities, LIST runs the national REACH&CLP Helpdesk.

Description

The selected candidate will mostly work on chemicals policies. She / he will :

  • pro-actively inform Luxembourgish companies about their regulatory obligations via events, publications and the REACH&CLP Website (reach.lu)
  • answer concrete company questions
  • be involved in the exchange at European level, e.g. via the network of the helpdesks of the Member States and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)
  • The selected candidate will also contribute to the further development of the EPS activities on chemicals, e.g. on the substitution of hazardous chemicals, the safe use of chemicals, and a deeper focus on selected product groups such as nanomaterials, plastics, etc. Moreover she / he :

  • will assure the link to chemicals policies in other policies areas the EPS group and LIST are working on
  • contribute to diversify the portfolio of the EPS group, via the submissions of R&I proposals or EU policy implementation proposals to EU funding instruments
  • contribute to the setting up of contract research projects with industry, and to better link the EPS group to other LIST activities, e.
  • g. by supporting the consideration of regulatory aspects in LIST RDI projects

    Education

  • A Master degree in natural / environmental science or engineering (e.g. chemistry or related fields)
  • A PhD is considered an asset
  • Required seniority

  • Several years of experience in the implementation of the EU Regulations REACH and CLP in industry, an RTO environment or scientific consulting
  • Experience in related environmental policies / legislation fields (e.g. occupational health and safety, biocidal products, persistent of organic pollutants, hazardous waste, etc.
  • is considered an asset

  • Additional experience in other fields that backs up her / his future tasks / role will also be considered an asset (e.
  • g. environmental legislation, innovation, communication / awareness raising, project management, etc.)

  • The position requires interdisciplinary thinking, well-developed communication skills (oral and written) and team spirit to successfully integrate into the multicultural, multilingual and multidisciplinary work environment at LIST
  • The candidate should be highly motivated, pro-active and open for new challenges
  • Knowledge of Luxembourg and the Luxembourgish industry is considered an asset
  • Language

  • Fluency in German and English is mandatory
  • French and / or Luxembourgish are considered an asset
